Johnson Matthey Plc is a chemicals company which specializes in precious metals, catalysts and the manufacture of other chemical ingredients. The company employs nearly 10,000 people in 30 countries around the world. Johnson Matthey is one of the world's foremost manufacturers of gold bullion bars and was the USA's largest manufacturer of "minted" (i.e. as opposed to cast) gold bars from the 1970's to 2000.

Johnson Matthey has a long and prestigious legacy - originally being founded in 1817 by Percival Norton Johnson, who started the business as a gold assayer in London. The company was joined by George Matthey in 1851 and in 1852 the company was appointed as Official Assayers, Melters and Refiners to the Bank of England. The name of the firm was changed to Johnson & Matthey, then Johnson Matthey. The company head office is on Farringdon Street in central London. Johnson Matthey is considered to be one of the "top flight" of gold bar manufacturers with a long standing reputation for quality and product integrity.

Johnson Matthey gold bars are one of the products for which the company is best known and were manufactured for the international gold market by the company in the UK for over 150 years. Johnson Matthey has also made silver bars in several sizes including 10 oz, 50 oz, 100 oz and 1000 oz. Johnson Matthey PLC manufactured gold bars in the UK until 2004, however although JM gold bars are not made any longer in the UK, the group has several overseas companies which manufacture. Now, Johnson Matthey Group continues to manufacture gold bars through Johnson Matthey Inc. (USA), Johnson Matthey Limited (Canada), and AGR Matthey (Australia) - and its refineries in these countries are accredited by the London Bullion Market Association.

Johnson Matthey's trademark official stamp depicts a "hammer and geologists pick" and this, together with the initials "JM" may be seen on the modern Johnson Matthey bars - as in the image. However, some of the old bars cast in the UK featured an older logo - the "double oval" logo with the company name within it.
